Art Café

Over the past few terms, Yuvraj B. (5ths) ran a series of Art Café sessions during the hour in which students created a deck of “Art Café Uno Cards”.

This deck consisted of a lino cut print which corresponded to an Uno card; each individually cut and designed by the students. Over many hours, the students worked tirelessly to curate unique and captivating designs.

In order to kick start this creativity, we used a random noun generator to act as a prompt for each design. Once sketches had been made, using charcoal, we transferred them to the rubber linoleum blocks. Next (arguably the most enjoyable stage, yet the most dangerous) came the cutting! Careful to keep fingers away, we cut out our designs, essentially engraving away the areas we did not want to be printed. We had therefore created our stamps and proceeded to print them in the four colours synonymous with a deck of Uno cards: red, yellow, green and blue. In order for the game to function properly, there need to be four copies of each card; one in each colour.

Finally, in order to finish the cards, I printed a design I made on the back of the cards using lino. Everyone worked extremely hard on this project and the outcome is amazing! Yes - you can actually play the cards, as tested by myself! Currently, the Uno cards are suspended from the ceiling in Mr Cataldo’s room, and they look great! Thanks to all involved!
