Summer Reading Challenge
Each year the Library, in conjunction with the English Department, organises a Summer Reading Challenge with the purpose of encouraging our pupils to develop or maintain a reading habit over the summer holiday. The challenge is open to pupils currently in the Lower School and to those joining us in September. The current Fourth Form are particularly encouraged to explore different types of reading material in preparation for starting their GCSEs. The challenge also offers useful insight into the extent and nature of our pupils鈥� recreational reading.
We have provided a PDF booklet containing tips for reviewing, recommended websites and a reading quiz, alongside space for book reviews and any other reading-related material your child may wish to include. The challenge is to fill in the booklet over the summer holiday and return it to their English teacher (digital or printed copy) by Monday 9 th September. Prizes are awarded for originality, effort and quality of the content of the booklet, not the level or quantity of their reading.
Please download the PDF booklet relevant to your sons year group and save it with your sons name added. Alternatively you can print them and complete them by hand.
Every pupil is expected to participate in this challenge and complete at least three reviews in their booklet, which will then be graded by their English teacher at the beginning of the Autumn Term 鈥� a grade which will contribute to the first official English assessment of the new academic year. Full instructions for taking part are included in the booklet.
There is an additional optional competition for those pupils who feel inspired to produce something related to what they have read, such as artwork, a book trailer, musical composition or creative writing. This will be judged separately to the reviewing booklet and is not part of the compulsory challenge.
The correlation between pupils who are active readers and those who achieve highly in English at all levels, including public examination, is well known. Our greatest wish, however, is that every pupil at 91茄子鈥� School discovers and nurtures a love of reading, in whatever form that may take; for it is a lifelong joy.
