Master Fan Maker Abseils in the City of London

Mike Lakin, Master of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers will be taking part in a daring feat of bravery abseiling down one of London's tallest buildings to raise money for a variety of charities.

Writes Mike Lakin (Master of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers)

I am the current Master of the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers, which, like the 91ÇÑ×Ó, is one of the one hundred and eleven Livery companies in the City of London. The Fan Makers hit the headlines earlier this year in February when the Queen became an Honorary Fan Maker. At the time, I was the Free Warden, and I was equally honoured to have clothed the Queen at that ceremony just two days before I became this year’s Master.

Whilst we are not one of the big twelve like the Merchant Taylor’s Company (and we cannot claim to have set up a School), the Fan Makers are number seventy six in the order of precedent, compared to the sixth or seventh ranking enjoyed by the 91ÇÑ×Ó. All the companies are equally linked to the City and The Lord Mayor, and contribute towards its collective charitable giving, which annually amounts to over seventy million pounds.

Each Livery company contributes to this (some much more than others), and each new Lord Mayor contributes through their ‘annual appeal’. This year’s appeal by Michael Mainelli (the 695th Lord Mayor), is supporting three charities, comprising of:

  • MQ Mental Health Research ()
  • Homewards ()
  • National Numeracy ()

These all form a part of the appeal’s theme of  â€˜A Better City for All’,

I decided to support the Lord Mayor’s appeal by abseiling off the London City Cheese Grater! If you would be interested in supporting this excellent cause, and re-investing into our wonderful city, please do visit my Just Giving link: . Thanks to all who help to support our cause!
